General Information on Population
- In 2007, the world’s population is more than 6.5 billion. Up to 85 percent of the world’s population lives in developing countries.
- According to UN estimates, the population of the 50 poorest countries is projected to more than double by 2050. The world population will increase by 2.5 billion.
- Nearly half of the world's population is young people, from 15 to 24 years old.
- Women account for 70 percent of the world’s illiterate people.
- 28 percent of the world’s population lived in extreme poverty in 1990. By 2002 the figure had decreased to 19 percent mainly due to Asian development.
- The global unemployment rate for young people was 85.7 in 2005.
