According to the view of The Family Federation of Finland, abortion should not be used or promoted as a method of family planning.

• Complications of abortions done by using dangerous methods cause about 70 000 maternal deaths. The number accounts for 13 percent of all maternal deaths.
• About 19 million women have to put their health or lives in risk because of dangerous abortions. This may be because the abortion is illegal, extremely restricted in the country. Sometimes women are not able to get safe abortion either economically or geographically.
• Even 80 percent of women, who have had dangerous abortions, suffer illnesses, injuries, or are disabled.

Dangerous abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal death. It is also easiest to prevent by offering safe abortion services and post abortion care. According to estimations, more accessible and effective family planning services and contraception services could prevent up to 35 percent of all maternal deaths.
