Promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights and increasing gender equality are key factors in improving the status of women in developing countries, in the prevention of HIV/AIDS, in promoting social and economic development and in alleviating poverty.

The aim of the advocacy work carried out by Väestöliitto’s Global Development Unit is to increase the knowledge of its key target groups - Members of Parliament, other decision-makers, the media, teachers and young opinion leaders - about the importance of promoting sexual health and rights in developing countries. The goal is also to get representatives of the target groups to act in their own communities and networks as advocates for these issues and, for example, to influence political decision-making and the opinion of the general public.
