Cooperation in the Baltic States

The Baltic states have gone through a transition from a recipient country to donor country when joining European Union. In their new role, they are expected to have understanding about international development policies and formulate the national development policies. This process is on in the Baltic states.

In order to promote this process, the Family Federation of Finland has already organized three international conferences together with the sexual health organizations of the Nordic and Baltic states and the Parliamentary group on Population and Development.

The first conference
, “Finnish-Baltic Roundtable on Development and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights” was held in Riga 23-24 January 2006.

The conference was a part of the advocacy work, which the Global Development Unit of the Family Federation, with the financial support from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations, aims at the new EU countries and institutions. At the end of the conference, Finnish and Baltic MPs gave a joint declaration. It highlights the importance of sexual and reproductive health to development and the cooperation between countries.

The conference held in Riga has received recognition for its successful concept and execution. The formula is considered as a good method for supporting the participation of Baltic civil societies, expanding networks and strengthening cooperation between countries close to Finland.

The conference series continued on 29 November 2006 in Helsinki with a seminar “Investing in People by improving Global Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”.

The third conference
, "Increasing Europe-Wide Support for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights-Towards the UN High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS 2008” was held in Tallinn 31 March-1 April 2008. At the end of the conference MPs signed a declaration, which highlights the centrality of sexual rights and sexual health in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
