Funding granted to Väestöliitto to research evolvement of human capital and productivity under various migration scenarios.

The Stratogic Research Council has granted over 1,4 million euros of funding for the consortium “Population projections for migration scenarios, human capital development, and sustainable integration” (MigScene), led by Väestöliitto’s Population Research Institute. Wolfgang Lutz is the principal investigator of the consortium.
MigScene consortium explores how human capital, and productivity may evolve in Finland under various educational, migration, and integration scenarios. Using Finnish and international microsimulation tools, survey and register data, and machine learning techniques, the consortium will present a set of multidimensional population projections for Finland between 2025 and 2070.
“It is essential to understand with scientific tools who are the Finns of the future, what will be their capabilities and their wellbeing and how to assure future social cohesion,” states professor Lutz.
In addition to Väestöliitto, the University of Turku and the University of Helsinki are partners in the consortium. Other collaborators are cities of Helsinki, Turku and Tampere, and Tampere City region, Statistics Finland, and different Ministries. Väestöliitto is also responsible for the project interaction.
The Strategic Research Council established within the Research Council of Finland has granted a total of 29 million euros for two new programs Skills, Labour Supply and Migration in Future Finland (SKILLS) and Economy and Welfare in an Era of Strategic Competition (WELEC). MigScene is part of the SKILLS program. The ten consortia of projects to be funded focus on long-term research to find solutions to key societal challenges.
